…And a Partridge in a Pear Tree

Did you go out shopping on "Black Friday"?  The roads and stores around here are so jam-packed that I just order most of my gifts online.  And fortunately, my family as a whole likes gift cards and certificates, so most "shopping" is fairly easy.

However, David and I ventured out yesterday (Saturday) in search of more flea markets.  We've been traveling around South Florida, and have even ventured up into Central Florida searching for treasures.  And aside from some things that show up in virtually every flea market we've been to (Avon, lucky bamboo and parakeets), you never know what you'll find.

But you know what I am having a tough time locating?  Christmas tree pins.  For that matter, Christmas jewelry as a whole.  I see a ton of jewelry sellers, but they are mainly the gold-plated chains and sterling silver jewelry.  Oh, and the stretch bracelets.  But no one has Christmas pins!

(Of course they could always be like me and be hoarding them.)

Well, I have managed to snag a few from ebay, but in some cases, they were a hard-won battle.  At any rate, let me leave you with a photo of the pins I have won from ebay.

Then later on today or perhaps tomorrow, I will share with you pictures of a gorgeous Christmas gift I got from Jennie, involving lots and lots of seed beads in bracelet form.  I don't even want to think of the time it took her to make them!

Today's eye candy consists of [nmslink:boro beads -sex, boro beads], which even though I don't work it anymore, I still love the look.

Flea Markets, Beads and Jewelry

For the first time in awhile I went on a flea market search for beads, beaded jewelry and vintage signed costume jewelry.  What fun I had, looking through the piles!  But my eyes hurt from squinting to see the signatures on the jewelry (even with a loupe it was difficult at times).

My mission today was simple; I was on a hunt to find vintage costume jewelry with one of the three "R's" -- re-sellable, re-usable or restorable.  And yes, I found nice examples of all three.

I took my husband David with me, and he was a big help, in pawing through the jewelry looking for signatures.  In fact, he found two pieces that I immediately snatched up!  And he suggested that we go to a much bigger flea market tomorrow to see what we can find.  So we'll go early and probably stay all day (it's a very, very large flea market).

Were They All Treasures?

Well, I did make a few mistakes, about $2 worth.  Don't ask me why I picked up 3 Christmas pins that I didn't mean to buy...but I bought anyway, by accident.  They are pretty, for sure, but I realized that one tree had a branch broken off.  Another was a necklace that I thought had a particular designer's signature, but I didn't check with my loupe.  Oops, once I got home, the signature wasn't what I thought.  But at 50 cents each, my mistakes didn't cost too much.

Like Vintage "Redux"?

Jennie sent me an email this morning about a book by Kalmbach publishing (you know, the Bead & Button people) about taking vintage pieces and remaking them into new pieces.  Naturally, I checked on Amazon and they have it (for a much better price).  If you think this is a cool idea, check out Vintage Redux: Remake Classic and Collectible Jewelry for some ideas and inspiration.  So, if this sounds interesting to you, why not pick up a copy (I have one in my Amazon shopping cart right now).

Well, I'm going to go for now and go play with today's finds.  So I'll leave you with some [nmslink:vintage bead lot, ideas for redux supplies] (if you don't have any good flea markets nearby).

Christmas Tree Pins Again

Christmas tree pins, as I stated in my previous post, don't make up a lot of my costume jewelry collection; I just haven't collected them much (or, collected inexpensive ones and tossed them when I no longer wanted/needed them).

So, I've been bidding on ebay for Christmas tree pins, to no avail -- until a few nights ago.  I won!  I won!  And I think it's a lovely pin, too.

It's designer/manufacturer is Eisenberg, and naturally it's signed costume jewelry.  Since Eisenberg still makes costume jewelry, and based on the condition of the pin, I'm going to guess the year made as somewhere in the 1980s, or possibly early 1990s.  So maybe it's not quite vintage.  But it sure is pretty, don't you think?

And miracle of miracles, I won another Christmas tree pin last night!  This one is definitely vintage, as my friend Jennie has the same pin, and she remembers getting it either in the late 1960s or possibly the very early 1970s.  Since I just won that one, it'll be a few days before I get it in hand.

I have a bid for one more, and it doesn't end until tomorrow.  Keep your fingers crossed for me, that I win!

I never really realized exactly how collectible Christmas tree pins were until I was bidding on them.  I've seen quite a few go $100 or more, and plenty in the $50 and up range.  As for me, my budget doesn't go that high; I keep it under $20 per pin.

Well, if you're interested here's a [nmslink:signed Christmas tree, list of signed Christmas tree pins] on ebay.  And naturally, here are a tantalizing few below.

It’s About Time for Christmas Pins!

For some of us, it's a yearly ritual; once November arrives, we're on the lookout for the newest Christmas tree pins to add to our collection.  Or Christmas pins, at any rate -- some definitely aren't trees!

For a few years, I eagerly awaited Thanksgiving (because that's when the good pins would show up in the stores).  Then for some years, I quit buying pins.  Not sure why, but I think it was just a different work environment (i.e. more casual clothes).

But, I'm ready this year -- it's November, so bring on the Christmas jewelry!

O Christmas Tree

As you can see from this small sampling, two things are apparent.  One, I don't have a large proportion of tree pins.  Second, I like cats!

I'm not sure why I don't have many trees, but it's probably because there for awhile I was buying the trees that lit up.  Well, every year they would break and I would throw them out.

Could be that's why I don't have many Christmas tree pins?

I was about to do a tutorial on making seed bead Christmas jewelry, but my project got out of hand (got too complicated).  So, I'm re-thinking what I can set up for you.

Meanwhile, I've been haunting the [nmslink:weiss christmas tree,Christmas tree ebay auctions].  There is one pin that I really, really want and I keep missing out on.  One day I will win it!

Ah well, while I keep a weather eye out for my elusive pin, I thought I'd give you a look at some Christmas jewelry!
